Obituary for Anthony L. McConnell

Anthony L. McConnell
Anthony “Tony” L. McConnell, Jr. passed away quietly at his Irwin home on October 10, 2018. He was 72. In a life that was foremost about family, Tony entered the world in 1946 as the oldest of eight children to Red and Betty McConnell. Growing up, he could be found playing all types of sports with his siblings and working at his dad’s garage, helping with routine oil changes, and even rebuilding the occasional transmission. He graduated from Greensburg Central Catholic, St. Vincent College, and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry before settling back to Irwin. During his time at St. Vincent, he met his college sweetheart, Ginny (Segedy) who was attending neighboring Seton Hill College. The two were married in 1970. Tony was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Irwin. Through their 48 years of marriage, Tony and Ginny built a loving and supporting family. They briefly welcomed a newborn son and raised two more boys, Sean and Christopher. As a dad, Tony was always present - playing around the yard, coaching both in basketball and soccer, attempting to teach them to work on cars (those lessons didn’t stick), and teaching them the importance of kindness, warmth, and generosity. Later in life, he and Ginny would frequently travel around the country visiting their boys and daughter-in-law for races, trips to the beach, a round of golf, or just to create memories on a weekend adventure (#MFV). As much as he loved his boys, you could always tell he had a soft spot in his heart for the girls in his life - whether for his daughter-in-law Kameron or his granddaughter Mallory. Tony worked as an optometrist throughout southwestern Pennsylvania, ultimately operating a practice in Latrobe and Fredericktown (Washington County). As a doctor, he will be most remembered for the kind and gentle manner he treated his patients and his willingness to always fill-in for fellow optometrists when they needed a hand. Tony is preceded in death by an infant son, his dad Red, and sister Marlene. He is survived by his wife Ginny, sons Sean (Kameron Scotto) and Christopher, his granddaughter Mallory; by his mom, Betty; his siblings, Michael McConnell, Tom (Mary Ann) McConnell, Bette Ann Soisson, Bonnie McConnell, Jeffrey (Nancy) McConnell, and Jenny McConnell, and by countless nieces and nephews and family friends. Visitation will be at Ott Funeral Home at 805 Pennsylvania Ave, Irwin. Thursday, October 11, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM and Friday, October 12, 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Parting prayers will be held 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church, 302 2nd St, Irwin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Immaculate Conception Church 308 Second Street Irwin PA 15642 or the Norwin Public Library 100 Caruthers Lane Irwin PA 15642.
