Ruth (Powell) Swanson, 87, of Ligonier formerly of North Huntingdon died Thursday March 15, 2018 at the Brookdale, Latrobe. She was born September 5, 1930, in Paintertown a daughter of the late William and Sophia (Beyvel) Powell. Prior to her retirement Ruth along with her late husband John owned and operated Irwin Beer Distributor. She was a member of Learning Is Fun and Easy (L.I.F.E.) in the Westmoreland Mall at the former Trombinos where she played the organ. In addition to her parents she is precede in death by her husband John Swanson and four grandchildren. Surviving are three children Keith Swanson and his wife, Joan, of Margarete, John Swanson III and his wife, Bert, of Slickville, Pam Leone and her husband, Jim, of Greensburg; nine grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and six great great grandchild; three sisters Shirley King and her husband, Duane, of Armburst, Carol Haines and her husband, Fran, of Westmoreland City and Billie Skrabski and her companion, Jim, of North Versailles and several nieces and nephews. Ruth loved riding motorcycles with her father; she learned to roller skate from her aunt Helen at the age of 5 years old and still roller skated up until her illness. She began playing the organ in 2007 and volunteered over 15years at Darlington Fire Hall for Election Day; at the age of 10 she began piano playing and played the Saxophone in the former Sewickley Township High School Band for four years. She was a Den Mother for the Cub scouts, in Jeannette. Friends will be received 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Ott Funeral Home Inc. 805 Pennsylvania Avenue Irwin. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Entombment will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Greensburg.
